Creative Writing Training for Youths in Aceh

Since Monday 18 until Wednesday 20 May 2009, Center for Community Development and Education held a creative writing training  for the youths in Aceh.  The training is participated by 24 youths consists of 23 female youths and one male.  They are from South Aceh, South West Aceh, Nagan Raya, Great Aceh and Banda Aceh. The participants of the training are the youths who have been the members of youth groups from the five districts. Here, in the training, the youths are motivated or encouraged to create some articles or essays.  As it was mentioned by Tabrani Yunis, the Director of Center for Community Development and Education (CCDE) that the training is done base on the current situation where very few women and female youths write for the public media in Aceh and even in Indonesia. Most spaces in the public media is dominated by men. This public sector actually must be accessed and controlled by women. But in fact, women are only as the consumers or the readers.  Even most existing public media utilize women and female youths as the object of the media. Therefore, this training is also aimed at bring women and the female youths as the subjects of the media where women can write and contribute for the media. The media can be accessed and controlled by women and the female youths. Further, this training will automatically encourage women and female youths to read and read.

 

In order to provide spaces for women and the female youths to write, Center for Community Development and Education (CCDE) Banda Aceh in January 2003 firstly published a women media called POTRET. So, POTRET become as the bridge for women to public media. Hence women and the female youths in Aceh practice their ability to write.

 

Now, the three days training on creative writing is aimed at building Acehnese female youths to write essays, articles, poems, features etc, is ended. All participants promised to write for POTRET and will actively practice write articles or essays.

 

This training is held by Center for Community Development and Education (CCDE) Banda Aceh, under the support of International Youth Foundation (IYF) bases in Baltimore, USA. Some of the participants show their happiness with the training, which will bring them able to be the writers.
